Chippewa County International Airport in Kincheloe will receive just under $1.5 million dollars in grant money for improvements. The United States Department of Transportation awarded the grant that will be used to repair runways and taxiways, including repainting markers. According to Tami Beseau, airport manager, in 2022, there were 48,000 passengers that used commercial service, which is only 1,000 less than their best year (2019).  Another 2,500 passengers from private aircraft also used the airport. LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A state grant will help Chippewa County find new uses for vacant buildings at a former Air Force base in Michigan‘s Upper Peninsula. The Department of Environmental Quality has awarded $45,000 in brownfield funding to the Chippewa County International Airport. It will help the county’s Economic Development Corporation evaluate under-used buildings on the airport grounds and determine what types of cleanups and asbestos treatments are needed.
